In my endless search for another Miata, I have been trying to really narrow down on what I am looking for in my purchase. I have seen enough crap so far that I am just going to stop trying to rush into buying something that is “okay”. I have been toying with an NA or an NB1 just to expand my options, but its just not what I want. I have looked at boring colors but its not going to make me happy. I need to just be patient and find an NB2 in green, yellow, blue, or red with some level of maintenance performed and in good condition. This will result in me having to pay for it, but I would rather pay money than just pick up a ratty one and deal with it. Perhaps I can talk this one down but its probably worth paying more for this or something like it. At an asking of $6800, it is steep but it’s not a terrible starting point. I cant go buy it right now since I leave for a 3 week trip. So the high price should at least keep it stagnating a bit till I get back. Let’s see how it goes though since I definitely plan on checking it out and considering it!

or.... find a boring coloured good condition miata

and get a nice wrap in whatever awesome colour you want

(it wont even hurt resale value.... tho im not sure how much that matters given how cheap used miatas are anyway)

doing paint or wraps are $1k+, no sense in buying something in the wrong color at that point. I do care more about the condition of the mechanicals but that seems to be a hard thing to find as well. But the thing is engines are cheaper than paint. Id rather the car be in perfect aesthetic condition and come with no motor at all for super cheap. I have no problem doing mechanical work but I cant do anything to improve bad paint or damage or rust.

Bright colors are just more better, especially on small cars

fair dinkum mate.. just throwing ideas out there

dude near me has a lime green miata (doesnt look like a factory colour)

he wraps it matte black every winter (wich again makes me think his lime green was not a cheap paint jobbie)

(i only figured it out coz he keeps his green wheels in winter)

The dealership near me till has a yellow FoST on the lot, brand new. 6000$ off.
You should get both. A yellow FoST for a daily and a yellow miata for sunny days and autocrossing!

This is close to the thought process ive reached when looking at an FD Rx7.

Ive seen several cheap ones go by, several tuned ones go by, and several concours ones go by

But the combination offered has never been right.

Ideally im looking for a manual with a black interior and a sunroof.

The outside color i could always change but we didnt get my favorite color here. Though anything but red or montego blue may keep me from adding the extra price of paint.

And after all is said and done, if I want to be an adult I could wait to import a 99 spec one in the color I want and be so much closer with so much less hassle other than an odd driving position.

I am a fan of the factory colors, and if I find a clean enough car in a boring color, id still probably buy it anyways. I am less concerned about the color and more just the condition of it. The last one I looked at had perfect paint but thats because it was a full repaint and the frame damage and hidden engine issues led me away from that dumpsterfire. It seems like most cars are listed at the same price regardless of condition which is my issue, hard to find a good one that isnt owned by an idiot lol.

I already have my STi that fills that roll nicely. While its not yellow, the Aspen white is way nicer than I expected. So damn bright when I clean it. We have like 350+ sunny days here per year so top down is always where its at! Miata will be track/daily use with some interchangeable parts (seat, tires, seat belt) to make both better.

Only 5 more years left to wait for that! And I would have to imagine shopping for an FD is much harder, especially if you want to be a rotary purist and dont intend on LS swapping. If I had the money, that would definitely be something I would want as well. If you squint at it the NB and FD kind of look similar and I have always thought of the FD as a way better looking and way more interestingly powered Miata coupe.

I wouldn’t rule out an NB1 (with a torsen) from your search. The only thing I think they’re really lacking is the real cup holders in the console.

I’d offer that VVT is completely a take it or leave it kind of thing that makes little difference on this motor in the end. Unless you’re going to add a turbo (or built, blue printed high compression race motor, I guess ) , the smaller brakes are not a disadvantage with appropriate pad choices for the particular application used. The smaller rubber is not noticeable on the street, and the track wheels and tires of your choice solve that problem where it counts. The chassis is noticeably not as stiff without all the NB2 bracing, but some money sent to flying miata fixes that problem if it is a concern to you.

The reason why I’d consider an NB1 (even without a torsen) is that I could salvage the parts from my current NB2 in order to make the NB1 effectively an NB2 with the non-vvt engine. But honestly I love the way the VVT feels. I drove a 1.8 NA and just could not get past how slow it felt without the VVT. It is probably not much different numbers-wise but I think the feel is significant. I havent driven an NB1 but I am pretty sure the engine there is the same as the NA8, except the car is heavier.

I think I would rather switch to an NA than go NB1. But I just havent seen too many NAs that interested me yet. It being an older car generally makes it harder to find one in good shape for a decent price. The pricing on NAs is wacky sometimes anyways. But yeah I havent ruled out either entirely. Most of my search quieries are 94-05 and then I just wade through everything and end up clicking mostly on the 01-05. I did follow up on an NA but it never panned out.

You know, I dont hate the LS swaps, but I love that rotary rev.

And if I want a LS powered, pop up headlight, manual coupe from the 90s, the C5 Corvette is right there turn key.

They actually sold NBs in the color that I want on an FD. Its the 10th anniversary color.

Actually, there are number of differences between and NB1 and NA 1.8. For the NB1, the 1.8 was updated with higher compression, better fowing heads, solid lifters instead of hla’s and a different intake manifold. 129hp vs 140hp. The gear ratio was also shortened on the NB.

VVT only added 3hp to the NB engine. My understanding was VVT as applied to this motor (on the intake cam only) was as much for emissions reasons (by that point a 20+ year old engine design) as much as anything else, particularly as related to cold start and partial throttle, light load conditions.

An NB1 is a considerably quicker Miata than an 1.8 NA. The weight difference between a 1.8 NA and an NB is only on the order of 150lbs or so. The NB is also a better handling Miata, as the updated suspension considerably increased travel (the biggest shortcoming of the NA in autocross and roadcourse use). Granted, the NB upper strut mounts can (and should) be fitted to an NA.

Also of interest for track use is the gearbox, as the NB has some strengthened internals compared to the NA.

This is some excellent information, thank you. I will definitely not discount NB1 entirely then. The headlights will be the only detriment for me, but its not like the NA headlights function any better either. Both have solutions though I guess so Ill just factor that into cost for me.

Hell yeah, get it, it’s not often a Special Order color car comes up for sale, let alone one in that nice of a condition!

If only autotrader listings had a phone number in the ad, that would make contacting the seller 1000 times easier haha.  I sent an email but who knows if I will ever get a response.
